Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Oil for searing (e.g., vegetable or olive oil)

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold), peeled and chopped
  • 34 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt, to taste

For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy

  • 8 oz mushrooms (Cremini or white button), sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Peel and chop the potatoes into chunks. Boil them in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. Meanwhile, sauté minced garlic in butter over low heat until fragrant and softened. Drain the cooked potatoes, then mash them with the garlic butter, milk, and salt until creamy and smooth. Set aside and keep warm.
  2. Make the Salisbury Steak Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onions, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined to avoid tough patties. Shape the mixture into oval patties about the size of your palm.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties on each side for 3-4 minutes until a nice crust forms. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside, leaving the browned bits in the pan.
  4. Make Mushroom & Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and onions. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and browned. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir to create a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up browned bits, until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for 5 minutes to soak in the flavors.
  5. Plate and Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak topped with generous spoonfuls of mushroom and onion gravy alongside a hearty scoop of garlic mashed potatoes. Optionally garnish with fresh parsley or chives and a dash of cracked black pepper.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature beef to help patties cook evenly and remain tender.
  • Mix meat just enough to combine to keep patties juicy and light.
  • Brown patties well to develop flavor and texture.
  • Cut potatoes into similarly sized pieces for even cooking and smooth mashed potatoes.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding more broth or flour as needed.
  • Allow patties to simmer in the gravy to enrich flavor and prevent dryness.
  • Use fresh garlic for the mashed potatoes instead of garlic powder for bright flavor.
