Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • ¼ to ½ cup cold water
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Apple Filling Ingredients

  • 4 tart apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Vanilla Glaze Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk or cream (or plant-based milk for dairy-free)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar in a large bowl. Cut in cold unsalted butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, mixing until the dough just comes together. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and dice the apples into small chunks. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the apples with brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice until tender but not mushy. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely before assembling.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: Divide the chilled dough into two equal portions. On a floured surface, roll each into a large rectangle approximately 12 by 8 inches. The dough should be thin but sturdy enough to hold the filling without tearing.
  4. Assemble the Kringle: Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over one rectangle of dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges by pinching and folding the sides to create a long oval shape. Transfer the assembled kringle to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake Until Golden: Beat an egg and brush it over the surface of the kringle for a glossy crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown and flaky. Allow the kringle to cool completely on a wire rack before adding the glaze.
  6. Prepare and Drizzle the Vanilla Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk or cream until smooth and pourable. Drizzle the glaze generously over the cooled kringle. Let the glaze set for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Keep butter cold to ensure flaky layers in the dough.
  • Do not overfill the kringle to avoid leaks and soggy crust.
  • Cool the apple filling completely before assembling to protect dough texture.
  • Use a sharp knife to seal the edges tightly and keep the shape intact.
  • Allow the glaze to fully set before slicing to prevent melting or slipping.
