Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Burgers

  • 1 lb ground chicken (lean)
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

For the Tzatziki Sauce

  • 1/2 cup cucumber, grated and drained
  • 1 cup full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp olive oil

To Serve

  • Pita bread or burger buns
  • Fresh spinach or lettuce leaves
  • Tomato slices
  • Optional: sliced red onion, Kalamata olives, crumbled feta cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce: Finely grate or chop the cucumber and use a paper towel to drain excess moisture. In a bowl, combine the cucumber, Greek yogurt, minced garlic, chopped fresh dill, lemon juice, a pinch of salt, and a drizzle of olive oil. Mix well and chill in the refrigerator while you prepare the burgers to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Make the Chicken Patty Mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine ground chicken, minced garlic, finely chopped red onion, dried oregano, ground cumin, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Mix just until ingredients are evenly distributed without compressing the meat too much to keep the patties tender.
  3. Shape and Cook the Patties: Form the mixture into evenly sized patties about 4 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat with a little olive oil. Cook the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and juices run clear.
  4. Assemble Your Greek Chicken Burgers with Tzatziki: Lightly toast pita breads or burger buns. On the bottom half, spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce, then place the hot chicken patty on top. Add fresh spinach or lettuce and tomato slices, plus any additional desired toppings like sliced red onion or feta. Cover with the top bun and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the chicken to keep patties tender.
  • Chill the formed patties for 20-30 minutes before cooking to help them hold together.
  • Use full-fat Greek yogurt for a creamy, stable tzatziki.
  • Fresh herbs like oregano and dill enhance flavor more than dried alone.
  • Let cooked patties rest a few minutes before assembling for juicier burgers.
