Fig and Goat Cheese Puff Pastry

Fig and Goat Cheese Puff Pastry

Fig and Goat Cheese Puff Pastry is an elegant and effortless appetizer that combines the natural sweetness of ripe figs with the tangy creaminess of goat cheese, all wrapped in flaky, golden puff pastry. Perfect for appetizers, snacks, or light brunches, this quick-to-assemble dish delivers a delightful balance of flavors and an impressive presentation.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Fresh figs: 6 ripe but firm figs
  • Goat cheese: 4 oz soft and tangy goat cheese
  • Puff pastry sheets: 1 sheet (thawed, store-bought frozen)
  • Honey: 2 tbsp for drizzling
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary: 1 tbsp chopped fresh herbs
  • Egg wash (egg + water): 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions, keeping it chilled but pliable. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the pastry slightly to smooth it. Cut into squares or circles based on your desired presentation.
  2. Slice the Figs: Gently wash and dry the fresh figs. Slice them into thin rounds or quarters to ensure even cooking and an attractive appearance on the pastry.
  3. Assemble the Pastry: Spread a layer of goat cheese evenly on each puff pastry piece, leaving a small border around the edges. Arrange the fig slices on top of the cheese. Sprinkle chopped fresh thyme or rosemary evenly over the figs for an herbal contrast.
  4. Add the Finishing Touches: Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the prepared egg wash to achieve a golden, shiny crust. Drizzle honey over the figs just before baking to add a delicate sweetness and glossy finish.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Arrange the assembled pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffed and golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold before baking to achieve the best flaky texture.
  • Do not overload the pastry with goat cheese or figs to avoid sogginess.
  • Use ripe but firm figs for optimal sweetness and texture.
  • Egg wash ensures a beautifully golden crust on the pastry edges.
  • Keep an eye on the oven as puff pastry bakes quickly and can burn if left unattended.
