Buttery Ham and Cheese Croissant

Buttery Ham and Cheese Croissant

This Buttery Ham and Cheese Croissant recipe features flaky, golden croissant dough filled with savory ham and rich, melted cheese, brushed with butter for a golden crust. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack, this versatile and flavorful pastry offers the perfect balance of salty, creamy, and buttery flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

Croissant Base

  • Pre-made or homemade flaky croissant dough (quantity as needed for desired number of croissants)
  • Melted butter (for brushing, about 2-3 tablespoons)

Filling

  • Thinly sliced ham (about 1 slice per croissant)
  • Shredded cheese (Gruyere, Swiss, or cheddar; approximately 1/4 cup per croissant)
  • Optional: mustard (a thin spread)
  • Optional: fresh or dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley, or chives; to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: If using store-bought croissant dough, gently unroll and separate the triangles. If making dough from scratch, roll it out evenly into triangle shapes to ensure perfect flaky layers.
  2. Add the Filling: Place a slice of ham and a generous amount of shredded cheese onto the wider end of each dough triangle. For extra flavor, add a thin spread of mustard or sprinkle some herbs if desired.
  3. Roll the Croissants: Starting from the wide end, carefully roll each triangle towards the point, keeping the filling enclosed. Slightly curve the ends to form a crescent shape.
  4. Brush with Butter: Brush the assembled croissants with melted butter thoroughly to enhance browning and add richness while baking.
  5. Bake Until Golden: Place croissants on a parchment-lined baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until croissants are deep golden brown and the cheese inside is bubbly and melted.

Notes

  • Use cold dough until ready to shape for best flakiness.
  • Avoid overstuffing to prevent filling leakage and uneven baking.
  • Brush melted butter twice, before and midway through baking, for extra gloss and flavor.
  • Choose melting cheeses like Gruyere or Swiss for smooth melt without greasiness.
  • Let baked croissants rest for 5 minutes before serving to meld flavors and make slicing easier.
