Butter Rice

Butter Rice is a simple, flavorful, and fluffy rice dish enriched with rich buttery aroma. This easy-to-follow recipe uses basic pantry staples to create perfectly cooked long-grain rice that pairs well with any main course or can be enjoyed on its own as comforting food. Ideal for both beginners and experienced cooks, this recipe delivers consistently tender, separate grains with a delicious buttery taste every time.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain rice (basmati or jasmine recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cups water or broth (for added flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

Optional Aromatics

  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • 1 clove garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Begin by rinsing your rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This step removes excess starch and helps achieve that fluffy texture so important in Butter Rice.
  2. Melt Butter and Toast Rice: In a medium pot, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the rinsed rice and gently toast the grains for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly to coat each grain with butter and enhance the nutty flavor.
  3. Add Liquid and Seasoning: Pour in your chosen liquid—water or broth—and add salt to taste. If using aromatics like a bay leaf or garlic clove, add them now. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil while stirring once or twice to distribute evenly.
  4. Simmer and Cover: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly with a lid, and let the rice simmer patiently for 15-18 minutes without lifting the lid. This allows the rice to absorb all the buttery goodness and liquid completely.
  5. Fluff and Serve: Once cooking time is up, turn off the heat and let the rice sit with the lid on for an additional 5 minutes. Then, remove the lid and fluff the rice gently using a fork to separate the grains and release steam.

Notes

  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent scorching and promote even heat distribution for uniform cooking.
  • Don’t skip rinsing the rice to remove excess starch and prevent clumping.
  • Use a tight-fitting lid to retain moisture, essential for perfectly cooked grains.
  • Let the rice rest off heat after cooking to allow steam to redistribute and improve texture.
  • Measure liquids accurately to keep rice tender, avoiding mushy or dry rice.
